Director of Professional Development – Garmin

Overview

We are seeking a full-time Director of Professional Development in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for leading the strategy, design, implementation, and evaluation of succession development, training and professional development at Garmin. This role will provide substantial opportunity for both vision and execution in these areas and will partner with executives, leaders and HR Generalists to deliver comprehensive individual contributor, management and executive development through education, experiences and exposure.

The ideal candidate is an accomplished, collaborative leader who has experience working with all levels of associates and leadership within an organization, and a proven track record of building and implementing progressive training and professional development strategies that directly align and enhance business outcomes, associate engagement, and organizational effectiveness.

Essential Functions

  • Architect and execute integrated professional development programs and processes to drive professional growth and accountability across the organization
  • Support Garmin’s Mission, Vision and Values through training to avoid dysfunctional behavior and reinforce the desired Garmin culture, leadership style and relationships
  • Design, build, and ensure delivery of focused training and development content and curriculum for Garmin leaders/associates
  • Consult with business leaders to understand their leadership/management development needs for input and the appropriate sponsorship, engagement and alignment
  • Track/drive measures of success/impact such as: business results, enhanced talent pipeline, retention and new behaviors clearly demonstrated
  • Partner with Leadership on succession development process and development of high potentials and high performers identified in the Talent Review; ensure creation and follow through on training and professional developmental action plans agreed to with their managers
  • Partner with HR Leadership on Performance Management Program and ensure it supports goal management and individual/organizational effectiveness.
  • Create on-boarding programs for Directors and above
  • Oversee design/creation of leadership programs utilized for readiness and development of high potentials
  • Partner with external vendors where appropriate and manage budget and vendor agreements
  • Directly supervise/lead various levels of team members by setting the tone for the team environment and providing individualized coaching, training and mentoring
  • Participate in recruiting activities, interview, hire, train, develop, motivate and evaluate performance for the team ensuring they are highly engaged and effective
  • Be a trusted advisor / partner to the business by building the necessary relationships to prepare and influence the education, experiences and exposures available
  • Partner with Leadership and HR Generalists on the Individual Development Plan process
  • Serve as a coach for succession candidates identified for critical roles and their managers to develop leadership and soft skills and prepare them for succession positions
  • Facilitate leadership programs and conduct individual coaching with Senior Leader participants
  • Leverage multiple delivery methods (OJT, ILT, virtual ILT, video, online, social learning etc.) to ensure training is easy to consume and impactful
  • Manage projects to enhance productivity and effectiveness of organizations
  • Research/introduce new training and development programs, processes and practices that are of value to Garmin

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Organizational Behavior, Development or Management, Communications, Psychology, Business, or related field AND a minimum of 10 years relevant work experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, sell ideas and have significant impact/influence
  • Must be results-oriented with strong track record of accomplishments
  • Ability to influence, motivate and engage associates and leaders to make the changes needed to progress within the organization
  • Well versed in assessment tools, training curriculums and coaching models/techniques with the ability to relate to technical leaders
  • Fully proficient with all phases of course and curriculum development with ability to mentor others in this skill
  • Proven experience in providing guidance, strategy, and conflict resolution with senior leadership
  • Demonstrates expert knowledge in the use of data, evidence based research, benchmarks, training and business metrics to make critical decisions
  • Proven ability to critically examine training initiatives and strategies and challenge assumptions
  • Demonstrates knowledge of economic factors and economic environment impact on industry and organization operations
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with demonstrated effective presentation skills and public speaking ability
  • Driven problem solver with proven success in solving difficult people-related problems
  • Must be positive, detail oriented, organized, team oriented and a driven problem solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the ability to prioritize and lead in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment

  • CPLP Certification
  • PHR or SPHR Certification
  • Master’s Degree
