Benefits Specialist – City of Lee’s Summit, Missouri

The City of Lee’s Summit, Missouri is a thriving, progressive community located 16 miles southeast of downtown Kansas City. Under minimal supervision of the Director of Human Resources, responsible for directing and planning the day-to-day operations of group benefits programs (group health, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability, life insurance, flexible spending plan, retirement plans, etc.). This position provides excellent customer service to all City employees. Works closely with vendors to ensure the City is offering competitive and quality benefits plans and to continually improve existing programs.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration or a related field of study
  • Five years’ experience benefits administration in a Human Resources related environment required
  • Ability to network and participate with Benefit trainings and Benefit leaders in other Cities to compare our benefits with people competing for our applicant pool
  • Demonstrated ability to stay up to date with benefit trends

Typical Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations, filing and compliance requirements both adopted and pending affecting employee benefit programs, including FMLA, COBRA, ADA, Section 125, ACA, and retirement plans
  • Working knowledge of general insurance practices to include claims processing and employee benefits
  • Working knowledge of City’s personnel policies
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Exceptional customer service and problem-solving skills required
  • Ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, and deal effectively with City employees, insurance company representatives and the general public
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of professionalism, discretion and confidentiality
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and with suppliers or the public as needed
